My bag and my gadgets… September 30, 2008

Ok. I made a mistake. I regret buying this HP tablet PC. I’m going back to Mac and never look back! LOL

It’s Windows Vista. It’s slow, it hangs, it drives me nuts, it takes forever to boot, and takes even longer to shut down! And this thing is built for Windows Vista. If I put Windows XP some of the stuff won’t work. So when I have the money, it’s a macbook 13″ or a macbook air for me. I’ll just have to use my PC to convert my favorite ebooks in Mobipocket. I just wish Mobipocket would make a Mac version… don’t they know that there are so many Mac users now?

If you have carried my bag, you’re one of the people who asked me what exactly it contains… bricks? hahahaha Yep it’s heavy, even guys find it heavy. Ok looking inside:

- Nokia E51 - my personal number
- Nokia 1120 - my wireless Bayantel landline
- Palm Treo 650 - my Sun number. Had to get one since my Smart Blackberry bill shot up to almost P7,000. I found that most of my business contacts have either a Smart or Globe and a Sun number. Helped me a lot!
- Blackberry Huron - love it, but unlike my Novare days where 50% of the bill is due to email and date charges, now only 15%, 85% is calls and texts. But I still love the keypad, and I type fast on it. I’m considering upgrading now to Infinity.
- Canon G9 - don’t go anywhere without it. I love my cam, I get to take fun pics, and I use it to document when I do store checks. And of course when I’m with my niece and nephews, it’s picture time! And with my new life, you never know when I have a moment with a celebrity or an interesting person… Friendster and Multiply pics are a must!
- my trusty calculator, it’s a folded small one, got it for free when I bought the big one :-)
- in another bag, my HP PC tablet. I have a Wolfpac shoulder bag that I could never use because it wasn’t big enough for my laptops, until I got this one. Now I’m a happy puppy, but again, I will switch to Mac first chance I get!

Aside from the gadgets, I have my trusty magic notebook where everything I gotta go is listed there (and the list keeps growing no matter how many I’ve checked and crossed out), MyGel 12 pc gel pen, yes, I’m a pen freak, I just realize now I got 3 pencil cases in my bag! LOL Time to get rid of some. This is now a paperless world!

I also have my wallet, my card wallet and my coin purse. Then there’s the cosmetic kit with my alcogel, tissue paper, compass for me to check Feng Shui stuff, the tape measure thingy used by carpenters. Yep I use it when I measure some parts of the store and buy needed furniture. What else..?? Keys, lipstick, pressed powder, liniment… more tissue. 2 card holders, one for my calling cards, another for my contacts.

See? Why does my bag weigh a ton? It shouldn’t right? *snicker*

A Day To Remember… September 28, 2008! September 29, 2008

I slept very late yesterday, or rather, this morning at 3am. Yesterday was one of the Sundays I’ll never forget. It started with a hectic morning, with me working on some of our collaterals. We were invited to the Star Magic Catalogue launch at the EDSA Shang at 4pm, and we have a wedding reception to attend, the bride was our cousin Rochelle.

Since I’m a bit afraid of crowds (yeah I know it’s not that obvious hahaha) I decided to treat myself with a makeover by going to Jesi Mendez, and as usual, I have no regrets with the service and the result. I haven’t done this in about 10 years(?)  And aside from that I decided to try out our Get Laud Plus skirt prototype, which was sitting in my closet for about a month, with me looking at it several times but never found the nerve to wear. I was surprised when it turned out good :-)

I gotta say, with all the salons I’ve been, whenever I go to a Jesi Mendez, regardless of branch, I spend more, but I NEVER regret the outcome. And this I’ve been doing for about 20 years, so trust me. I would go for months and months without going to a salon when I don’t have a budget, and then treat myself by going to a Jesi Mendez. Everybody there is a trained professional. I was surprised by the speed that they did me. I think I surprised my mom, my bro and even myself afterwards :-)

I took my niece Gabby with me to EDSA Shang, with her mom’s bilin ringing in my ears… “Make sure she takes pics with PIOLO and SAM MILBY!”. And we did that and more! It’s my first time to attend such a function, and inspite of my promising myself not to be star struck, I gotta admit I was. Get Laud is one of the sponsors, and Roxanne looks really great on the ad.  At the launch I met Claudine, Diether, John Lloyd, Sam, Piolo, Megan, Roxanne, and more… I can’t enumerate everyone. I gotta admit there were a number I do not know. Don’t have that much time to watch TV. Everyone looked so good, am glad I didn’t go with my usual casual clothes or I’d feel very out of place.

I think Gabby was the happiest, although when she got her fill of picture taking, she attacked the giant fondue buffet. There was a 5-tier chocolate fondue tower, and 2 smaller ones, strawberry and pandan I think. She loved the different marshmallows and fruits. I myself didn’t get to eat much, was too busy watching the goings on. As I watch the artistas, I can’t help but wonder about the life they live. It’s probably interesting, but also a busy life. I guess I’m too old to go starry eyed and not know that no life is perfect. Interesting though :-) should I audition? hehehe There was one funny moment when 2 girls approached me with a camera… I think they mistook me as a celebrity, which although flattering, got me moving fast to another area. I also refuse to think who they think I was hahaha! This is the part of my current job I like… it’s fun and I get to meet a lot of interesting people!

At around 6pm we left for my cousin’s wedding reception at Jumbo Floating Restaurant. It’s another first for me to go there, and my cousin Rochelle, looks pretty in her wedding gown. The restaurant also was very nice, food’s good too. I just wish my camera didn’t run out of battery :-) Next time I’ll make sure I have a fully charged battery when I go to a Star Magic launch! It was also good to see my cousins and aunts and uncles, although I didn’t get to talk to most of them. I don’t get to see my relatives much, all of us already have busy lives.

After the reception, we headed home, but I decided to meet up with a friend of mine and visited with him til 1am. So that’s how my Sept 28 ended :-)

Favorite Chinese Restaurants! September 22, 2008

Ok I’m playing hooky for a few minutes. Been wanting to blog about my favorite feeding spots hehehe  If you ask me what is my favorite food in the world, it’s DIMSUM. I can give up pizza, burgers, chicken in a basket, a buffet at Circles, but NOT dimsum and a nice bowl of wonton noodle soup! There are those that have “genuine” taste and there are those that for me and my family, too commercialized already. So here are some places I would go to again and again and again:

1. Tasty Dumplings - I’ve been going there since I was 14 years old. That’s 26 years of dumplings. Their recipe is one of a kind, none of those kuchay thingies in it. Just nice meat dumplings. Their dumplings sauce and chili sauce is also quite different from the usual. I can feast on their steam dumplings forever. I go to the one in Masangkay, Binondo, but I think they have a branch in Banawe, QC as well. Love their: PORKCHOP RICE/NOODLES - they serve the fried porkchop separately from the rice or the noodle soup. Again, there have been other restaurants that tried to do it, but nothing compares with theirs! STEAMED DUMPLINGS - they serve also pan-fried version but I love the steamed ones better. They have other yummy food but those 2 are to die for. I sometimes order fried mantou too. They sell their dumplings frozen as well, yumm!

2. Su Zhou - XIAO LONG PAO!!! That’s all I can say. I’ve tried everywhere, theirs is the only one that’s really good. A good xiao long pao should have broth inside the dumpling… and they do it perfectly! They also sell them frozen, which is a lot cheaper… BUT you gotta make sure that when you steam it at home, it’s just right… if the xiao long pao dough has a hole, then the broth comes out. They have several branches, I know one in Binondo, Paranaque at Liana’s Sucat, and recently I found the one in Mabini, San Juan. Their siopao is very good too, quite big and only P20!

3. Wan Chai Tea House - I go to the one in Benavidez St. They’re open til 2am. I used to go to Wai Ying which is on the same street, but unfortunately the quality has gone down. So Wan Chai is my new place to go. Dimsum galore, everything’s good there. My favorite of course is hakaw (shrimp dumpling). And their wanton noodle soup is great!

9/29/08

OMIGOSH… thanks to my sister G for reminding me, it’s a mortal sin to forget to mention…

4. Mazuki - when I was a kid it was Ma Kong, my parents call it Ma Mon Luk, but it became Mazuki. When I was in grade school, my mom would bring me there when I win honors in class or in a competition! They have added to their menu but when I go there, it’s the giant bowl of Mami, and their giant siomai. Actually ever since we went into siomai business, I don’t touch siomai from any of the restaurants, except THIS. When I was 19 and was hospitalized due to H Fever, that’s what I ate everyday. I gained 5 pounds after that bout at the hospital! hahaha They’re in Benavidez, still using the same sturdy furniture, no aircon, but I still go there a lot! Some of the crew there have been around since I was a kid :-)

Ok I know they’re all in Binondo… in Makati let’s see…

5. Mei Lin Bistro in Jupiter Place - they serve hand-pulled noodles. It’s quite heavy though, you might want to share. Their hot and sour soup is great, and their version of steamed dumplings is good too, but it has veggies inside. Their a la carte meals are great too, here are some: yang chow fried rice, steam fish fillet, sate beef noodle, hakaw! Only dish I didn’t like was their salt and pepper spareribs, they dipped it in batter so it tasted kinda weird. Better without it. And they deliver!

6. Luk Yuen - too bad the one in Glorietta 2 is gone. Now we go to the one in Cash & Carry. Their dimsum is good and their price is very affordable. I go for their hakaw and wanton noodle soup, AND their steam dumplings dipped in this lip scalding chili sauce that’s to die for…. but my family loves the a la carte dishes too.

7. Lutong Macao - this one’s in Jupiter, corner Makati Avenue. Food’s very good too but price is comparable to Mei Lin… a little cheaper lang than Zhu. Dimsum and a la carte are all good so far, and they have a lot of choices! They also deliver.

8. Thousand Cranes - I am lately partial to boiled, steamed and grilled food. When in Greenbelt 3 I usually go to this resto and order a mini shabu shabu! I usually don’t like veggies much but when it’s shabu shabu, I eat every last leaf. Put in the noodles last so that the broth is flavorful from all the ingredients you’ve thrown in.

When in Taguig…

9. Man Hann - they have different branches but they’re the only decent Chinese restaurant inside Market Market. You wait a bit because they cook it as you order but it’s worth the wait. We love: yang chow fried rice, sate chami (you can request to use the canton noodles instead) yummy but a bit greasy, hakaw, prawn tempura (yeah weird huh) more like camaron rebosado, steam fish fillet in garlic sauce, among others. Price is so so…

10. Zhu - located at the 32nd and Fifth, I haven’t been there in a while, but I miss their Peking Duck. You order them cooked 2 ways, I usually just order the one with the momo wrapper, then the rest is served as is with hoisin sauce. You can order them minced though with lettuce. Price here is a bit pricey but everything’s good. Oh and their prawn with sotanghon is really good!

11. Healthy Mini Shabu Shabu - I like going to their Boni High branch… just a little more expensive than Thousand Cranes but they also serve good steamed dumplings aside from the usual Shabu Shabu meal! They have other branches, so far I’ve been to Rockwell and Greenhills Virra Mall branch :-)

Libis…

12. San Jacinto Panciteria - when I was a kid we go to T.Pinpin after watching a movie at Escolta or Ongpin, and enjoy their unique asado, fried rice and pancit canton. There was a fire and it was years later when I found they are also in Quezon Ave or Blvd can’t remember, and Libis. It’s right across SM Pasig. Those 3 dishes are the only ones I order, they do serve dimsum now but not as good. We’d go there just to buy their asado, their sauce is different, spicy and sour and something else!

Ok, this is not a Chinese Restaurant but it’s a classic, when our parents are young they’re around na, since 1950. That’s SAVORY Chicken, I usually buy from the main one in Jones bridge, but someone came to his senses and decided to put Savory in malls. They now have branches in Glorietta, and recently I was at SM San Lazaro. I spotted one near Puregold Shaw too! The chicken is yummy and not too greasy, and their gravy… oh the gravy… when I was a kid I’d drink it from the cup (I’m bad)… actually I spoon it when no one’s looking even now hehehe. Their pancit canton is ok, but even with just the chicken I’m happy. They also have a la carte dishes, good and affordable.

Country Chicken is another classic. Again with their own unique recipe. I alternated between this and Savory during my Binondo days. They now also serve barbeque and some dishes. But I always take home the chicken. Don’t forget to ask for the gravy!

That’s it so far…… :-)

It’s 2:30am and I just finished watching Music & Lyrics on HBO for the nth time, still I felt tears in my eyes at the part where they got together. I guess I’m still a die-hard romantic. I just wish real life have more happy endings.

It’s now Sunday morning, yesterday I had a full day as usual, with the morning doing more administrative stuff, and the afternoon watching the rehearsal for our fashion show. I hope the event will be a success!
I’ve been thinking about going out more lately, just have to figure out how I can fix my schedule. I guess in my case, life is going to begin at 40 … yep, the big Four Oh is coming this December.

I also had an infection in my tongue that got really bad the other night :-( I feel better now after taking some antibiotics, but last Friday night, I couldn’t talk or eat without pain… I got really depressed…. 2 things I love doing in my life I can’t do? Eat and talk. Hihihihi Anyway, all’s well that ends well. Definitely need to see the dentist this coming week. A tooth that needed pasta refilling caused the problem in the first place.

A friend of mine lost her 6 year old son to dengue last week. I went to the wake and I can’t imagine how much pain they went through. Thinking of my nephews and nieces, I pray that they will be safe. It’s different when you go to a wake where an old person who’s lived a full live passed away. Such a young life snuffed out just like that. But perhaps he’s meant to be an angel. I did tell my sisters to take care and make sure that the kids are protected.

Going to rest this morning and then do rounds in the afternoon… looking forward to a vacation soon…

“Wanders” at Pagcor Grand Theater September 18, 2008

I spent the evening with my mom, G and Darren at Pagcor, Paranaque. We were invited by super diva Ms. Frenchie Dy, and oh boy, I didn’t know about the show til now! My only regret was that I didn’t bring Gabby. The song and dances were spectacular, and the acrobats were unbelievable! Too bad we weren’t allowed to take pictures. I hope to be able to take my brother and niece Gabby to watch the show before it ends.

Frenchie and I have become fast friends. I like her because she’s so nice and fun to be with. I admire her voice, and she’s an example of a genuine BBW (Big Beautiful Woman)! Hay! I wish I got her waistline hehehe… anyway, I’m inspired now to lose a bit of weight.

Anyway, back to the show, it was the first time I entered Pagcor. Last time I was at that building it was still Duty Free hehehe… yeah I’m old! I didn’t even know such shows exist! I hope I get to watch more stuff. I realize that I’ve been hiding in my cave for too long, and it’s time to go out and get a life. I guess it’s true that life begins at 40 hehehe the big day is just a few months away. I do recomment you bring your family to watch “Wanders“!

Frenchie, if you read this post, THANK YOU again for inviting us to the show, and we even got the best seats in the house! You were great, and I’m your fan and friend! Kitakits soon! Mwah!

S&R’s sucky customer service September 11, 2008

I am super pissed off with S&R’s customer service desk. We usually buy at least 5 steam irons by Home Touch worth about P5,000 each for our stores. One time one went kaputs so I went back to S&R for Home Touch’s contact details. At that time, whoever was there could not find the number, so I was asked to leave my landline and cellphone number. After 2 days, they called to give me the number. That should be the end of story.

But since then, I’ve been receiving calls on BOTH my landline and cellphone from irate S&R customers who wanted to contact Home Touch! Apparently now S&R customer service has been giving MY contact numbers! When I tried to call S&R I couldn’t get through their trunkline.

I decided to just do a good deed and give these people the number, but today, I got another call from a very makulit customer, while I was in the middle of a very important phone call. That’s it! I decided to try calling S&R again and this time got through to the Membership Desk where I gave my number before. And voila! When asked for the number of Home Touch, they gave me MY own numbers! Grrrr!!!!!! I told them to change it immediately and I am expecting an apology from them. What pissed me off even more was even though I explained the situation the girl I talked to asked for my membership number! Now what the heck does my membership number have to do with some stupid girl putting my contact details in their database of suppliers??

I expected them to do a lot better than this. I just hope I don’t get any more calls or I AM going there and give them a piece of my mind!

Get Laud! Holiday Collection shoot September 1, 2008

This is one shoot I will never forget. For the past week I had been losing sleep worrying about everything, how will it go, will it be what we expect. Coordinating stuff.  I’m a worry wart so sue me.

I was the first to arrive at the studio last Saturday, August 30, before
call time. Too wound up to eat any breakfast, I gulped 2 Zantacs. As
everybody arrived, excitement was in the air, with Roxanne, the super
galeng and cool stylist, and make up goddess Lala Flores. And why
wouldn’t I be wound up with Raymund Isaac as the photographer? From the
first time I met him, I became his fan. And as I watched them 3 work, I
can only shake my head and ask myself “why did I worry?”

It lasted for about 10 hours, and Roxanne was a trooper, even though I can
imagine how tiring it was for her. I regret not being able to take more
pics behind the scenes but I was running on reserve energy. Only thing
I can say, THIS is one great experience!

I’m looking forward to next week when we see the finished product, and for the summer shoot!
For now, I’ll be posting the pics hopefully in the next few weeks.
